Telematics is the single largest operating-cost lever for a multi-unit rental fleet in the UAE. The price has come down from AED 800/unit/year to AED 200–400 today, and the data is finally clean enough to drive real decisions — utilisation, theft, fuel auditing, automated billing. Here's what the systems actually do and the ROI per seat.

What telematics actually tracks

Modern telematics units (factory-fitted or aftermarket) report some combination of:

• GPS location, every 1–5 minutes.
• Engine hours (key-on, run, idle).
• Fuel level and consumption.
• Operating parameters: hydraulic pressure, boom angle (cranes), load (telehandlers with load sensors), temperature.
• Fault codes from the ECU.
• Geofence entry/exit alerts.

1. Utilisation accounting. Compare "key-on hours" against "billed days" — if a unit was on-site 22 days but engine-on 18 days, the renter got 4 days free (or you can argue downtime). Resolves billing disputes inside 24 hours.
2. Idle-time fuel auditing. Telematics shows when an engine was idling vs working. UAE summer typically shows 25–35% idle time on a working day. If a unit reads 60%+ idle, the operator may be misusing or the renter is parking it on the clock.
3. Theft / unauthorised movement. Geofence the rented site; alert if unit leaves the polygon. Several UAE rental owners have recovered units within 48 hours of unauthorised movement using telematics traces.

For a 50T crane on monthly rental, telematics typically returns:

• Dispute resolution: 1–2 dispute prevented per year × AED 5,000 average = AED 5,000+.
• Theft prevention / recovery: rare but high-impact; cumulative present value of avoided loss.
• Fuel savings via idle-time accountability: AED 2,000–4,000/yr.
• Predictive maintenance: AED 3,000–6,000/yr.
• Time saving on operator log-sheets and billing: ~10 hours/month admin saved.

Retrofitting older units

Data hygiene and integration

Watch out for:

• Multi-system fragmentation. If you run JCB + XCMG + Komatsu, you have three dashboards. Either consolidate to a single aftermarket system (EquipmentShare or similar) or accept the multi-tab life.
• SIM connectivity. UAE coverage is good but cellular dead zones exist (deep desert, some industrial basements). Plan for 95% uptime, not 100%.
